“Last Rites”: Reconcilation, Anointing, Communion

Don’t Wait till It’s Too Late! Call the priest (989-658-8145) for someone who is dying. They need the graces of the Last Rites! The Last Rites are three sacraments— Reconciliation (Confession), Anointing of the Sick, and “Viaticum” (Holy Communion)— given to a Catholic (or to a baptized non-Catholic properly disposed, see below) who is seriously ill or beginning to be in danger of death. “Holy Viaticum for the sick is not to be delayed too long; those who have the care of souls are to be zealous and vigilant that the sick are nourished by Viaticum while fully conscious” (Can. 922). Reconciliation prepares the person to receive anointing, Holy Communion, and the “Apostolic Pardon”, an indulgence the priest can bestow on the dying. Last Rites may also be given to baptized non-Catholics “who cannot approach a minister of their own community and who spontaneously ask for them, provided that they demonstrate the Catholic faith in respect of these sacraments and are properly disposed” (Can. 844).
