*Note about missing Mass: Mother Church teaches that Catholics have an automatic dispensation from our weekend Mass obligation whenever there’s a serious reason to miss Mass, e.g. dangerous travel, etc.:
Catechism #2181 “The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.”
If you need to stay home, you’re encouraged to meditate on the Mass readings, pray your own petitions for the church, the world, your parish family, your family, etc.; pray the Creed and the Our Father. Finally, make a “spiritual communion”, a prayer encouraged by the Saints when we cannot attend Mass or cannot receive Communion because we are aware of unconfessed mortal sins. We do this by asking Jesus to come into our heart spiritually and spending a few minutes in silent Adoration of Him. Here is a “spiritual communion” prayer by St. Alphonsus Liguori: “My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.”
